We have these once a month, usually on a Thursday evening.
Refer to the calendar for the exact time and date. They are
held in Willoughby Lounge in Felgar Hall. We have a guest
speaker lecture on a Civil Engineering topic, then we eat
dinner (it's free!!) and then discuss any chapter business. At the end of each semester, the students and faculty hold
a big luncheon where they ridicule one another. Actually it's
pretty fun, as it is the students' chance to get back at the
faculty that tortured them throughout the semester...This
generally involves skits and prizes that you don't really
want to receive. It also involves the best food you'll see. The Olympics are great fun, and an excellent way to get to know the faculty and fellow students. We hold about 3 of these each semester, and generally the students play against a team of faculty. We have played flag football, volleyball, kickball, dodgeball, bocce, bowling, and other sports. We hope this semester to have basketball, volleyball, and kickball. See photos of our last football game, where the students and faculty tied with 7 touchdowns a piece. Actually, the faculty recruited graduate students and even a few undergrads to help them, as they were undermanned. These are held the first Thursday of each month in Oklahoma City. They are free for students, as the department picks up the tab. They are an excellent way to network, to meet potential employers, and to learn about the issues facing civil engineers. We generally organize a carpool for anyone who wants to go up there. Contact us if you want to go. The concrete canoe is one of the most important of our activities. It is an excellent way to gain experience in the many facets of Civil Engineering, from finite element analysis to oral presentations. The team designs and builds one cane each year, and then competes in the regional and national competitions. These competitions include an evaluation of the design, a report, and oral presentation, and, of course, races. See our concrete canoe page for more information. The steel bridge competition, sponsored by AISC (the American Institute of Steel Construction) is an good way to learn how to design and construct a steel structure according to precise conditions. See our steel bridge page for more information. Our educational outreach is often undertaken in conjunction with the SeeS, going to elementary schools to teach science through the conduction of experiments, exposing students to the fields of engineering and science.
