Open House

Results are in! (Click to view)

Since 1912, engineering students of the University of Oklahoma have had the pleasure of extending an invitation to area high school students to participate in the Engineering Open House, the oldest and most successful recruiting event on the OU campus.  High school students from across the state come to Norman each year to sample what the OU Engineering programs have to offer.

Academic testing and engineering design competitions are the highlights of this event.  These competitions are designed to allow students to display their knowledge of math, science, and logic.  The annual Engineering Open House allows tomorrow's engineers and scientists to get started today!

Academic testing is divided into four categories: Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, and Computer Science.  The engineering design competitions include the Egg Drop, Mouse Trap Vehicle, Model Bridge, Ping-Pong Ball Launcher, Tower Construction, Miniature Oil Derrick, and DBF (Design Build Fly) Glider.  Students compete with other students from across Oklahoma, and students who display exceptional knowledge and skill will be awarded medals.

Information booths and tours of the College of Engineering are available for everyone.  The tours view the three main engineering buildings, examine projects currently in progress, and give us a chance to introduce you to representatives from various engineering disciplines.

The minature oil derrick will be built on site using materials provided by the Society of Petroleum Engineers.

The DBF Glider will be built before the contest. Only the materials listed may be used.

What are two straws of "my" length?

This is a typo, it shoul read two straws of any length.

Can I have additional information on the minature oil derrick contest?

Yes, they (the society of Petroleum Engineers) will provide scissors so that you can cut the popsicle stick if you like.  The popsicle sticks will be 4.5" long and 3/8" wide.  The only height requirement is that the derrick be greater than 8" tall (the dowel rods are 12" long and 1/8" in diameter).  They will provide pencils and paper for calculations, but they won't provide calculators.  They will provide 3ft of standard dental floss.
